A Magical Way of Stoping the Mamba?
In my last post, I failed to mention how Orlando will guard the NBA's most dynamic scorer in Kobe Bryant, so here it is. Mickael Pietrus and Courtney Lee will be the primary defenders on Kobe Bryant. I do not see Courtney Lee causing much of a problem for Kobe, he's a bit undersized at 6-4 and doesn't have the quickness to keep him from driving to the hoop nor the strength to defend him in the post. Nevertheless, Pietrus could really cause problems for Kobe (well as much as one defender can cause problems for Kobe). Unlike Lee, Pietrus is quick and is about the same size as Bryant, which will force Kobe into being a jump shooter (which he is still extremely effective, but it keeps him off of the free throw line) and Pietrus has the height to defend him in the post. Although Pietrus matches up well with Kobe, I still don't see him forcing Kobe into more than two bad shooting nights. Orlando will probably end up doubling and trapping Kobe using Lewis (who at 6-10 can disrupt Kobe's passes) or Turkoglu thus forcing other Lakers to hit open shots. Orlando may also use Rafer Alston to trap Kobe at the top of the key leaving Fisher, Farmar, or Brown open and daring them to shoot. Nevertheless, the Lakers are a great passing team and if Lewis leaves Odom or Gasol to double Kobe, both will dive to the front of the rim where they will force Dwight Howard to come out and defend. If Howard stays at home, both will get easy dunks, if he comes out to contest he can alter the shot, but he leaves Bynum alone for the offensive rebound or the lob for a dunk. Due to this, Orlando should probably double with Alston and force Fisher to make shots.
